Abortion rights campaigners say they're hopeful the Oireachtas Committee on the 8th amendment have fully educated themselves on the findings of the Citizens’ Assembly.

The Committee held its first meetings this week - but there were suggestions that some members were not completely familiar with the Assembly's recommendations.

A day of action is being held in Munster tomorrow featuring demonstrations, marches and poster making ahead of next week's March for Choice in Dublin.

Kathy D'Arcy from Rebels for Choice says she's staying positive that the Committee will respect what people want:

“I remain hopeful that the members of the Oireachtas Committee are educating themselves; are thinking very deeply with a lot care and foresight about these issues in an ongoing way,” she said.

“The trust of all the people of Ireland basically rests on this Oireachtas Committee and I think that they feel that significance. I hope that they do.”

She insisted the vast majority of the Irish people are in favour of legalising abortion and expressed her hope that Committee members are “keeping themselves informed of the mood of the people.”

Meanwhile an anti-abortion hunger-striker who is demanding that members of the Committee watch a video he claims depicts an abortion procedure is now in the fifth day of his protest.

This afternoon, Tim Jackson said the chair of the committee, Senator Catherine Noone, had written to him to say she had watched the video.

Events will be taking place in Cork and Waterford tomorrow for the day of action to repeal the 8th Amendment.

A “Warm up to the March for Choice' demonstration is scheduled to take place at 12.30pm at Bishop Lucey Park, Cork City.

In Waterford, a march calling on the Government to allow free, safe, and legal abortion in Ireland will take place at 2pm, leaving from The Bandstand, Ballybricken, Waterford City.
