The new roles will put its Irish workforce at almost 3,000.

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has welcomed the new jobs.

"Salesforce is an important part of our technology sector, helping Ireland become the tech capital of Europe and one of the most globalised and open economies in the world," he said.

"Ireland is open to investment, to capital, to trade, to talent and to creativity.

"I particularly welcome Salesforce's €1m grant to Educate Together, and the hospitality space being set aside for local community groups."

Salesforce.org, the philanthropic arm of Salesforce, has also announced a US$1m grant to Educate Together, supporting the opening and running of schools in Ireland.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe said: "I am particularly delighted to welcome Salesforce to the vibrant community of Dublin's north east inner-city which continues to flourish".

The CEO of IDA Ireland Martin Shanahan said: "This is one of the largest single jobs announcements in the 70 year history of IDA Ireland.

"As discussed during our visit to the company's headquarters in San Francisco last week, Salesforce is very familiar with what Ireland has to offer and this announcement is a strong indicator of the strength of the Irish proposition to investors across the world.

"Companies continue to choose Ireland as a place to invest and expand into Europe and further afield."

Business Minister Heather Humphreys added: "This is a hugely significant announcement and a strong vote of confidence in Ireland and what we have to offer."

Salesforce has more than 150,000 customers around the world and over 1,400 employees in Dublin.

It has had a presence in Ireland since 2001.
