Mick Wallace says he would like to be Ireland's first cabinet Minister for Housing.
He says being holding the proposed position "would be an absolute dream".
The Independent Wexford TD says he could not work with Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil because they are too neo-liberal.
However, Deputy Wallace says he and fellow Independent TD Clare Daly would be willing to listen to pleas from any party in exchange for their support:
Deputy Wallace's comments come as the cost of renting in Dublin passes the levels at the peak of the boom for the first time.
Niamh Randall of the Simon Communities says the current political uncertainty is not helping to resolve the housing crisis.
She says the charity is "really concerned that urgent action needs to be taken on this crisis", and has called on those in talks on forming a new government to see "housing and homeless issue as a red line issue".
Earlier this month, the charity made the call for a Minister for Housing after figures showed there has been a rise of almost 50% in the numbers of people in emergency accommodation.
