Met Éireann has issued a thunder warning for Ireland.

The status orange warning is in effect for this afternoon and evening, amid a forecast of 'widespread thundery activity'.

The warning is in effect between midday and 11pm.

It comes as a status yellow rainfall warning remains in place for Connacht, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.

Forecasters say some very heavy or thundery downpours are likely throughout the day, particularly in parts of Connacht and Ulster.

There is a warning of potential local spot flooding in those areas.

The rain warning is valid until 9pm.
