Management later removed the graffiti but a man in his twenties has since been detained and taken to Pearse Street Garda Station where he's been questioned in connection with criminal damage to the venue.
The vandalism was spotted by Twitter user @ConanGShore as he went by The George yesterday morning.
The defacement of the bar came two days before the second anniversary of the marriage equality referendum.
In a statement yesterday afternoon, the manager of the iconic Dublin nightspot, Darragh Flynn said the gardaí had been notified and management was assisting with their investigations.
He said "We are shocked and disheartened to see our building vandalised, especially with the anniversary of the equality vote this weekend."
"At times like these our community comes together in support like it always does - and we won’t let this ruin us celebrating this weekend's anniversary."
It's understood the attack on the pub was recorded on nearby CCTV.
