Make-A-Wish Ireland is appealing for volunteers for its 'Wish Day' fundraiser later this month.

The charity - which aims to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, and is funded entirely through fundraising and donations - began 'Wish Day' in 2013, and this year it will be held on Friday March 31st.

After raising €80,000 last year, Make-A-Wish is hoping to raise €100,000 through this year's fundraiser to help fulfill a target of 210 wishes this year.

They are hoping for at least 1,500 people to take part in fundraising across the country. Volunteers are being asked to give a few hours of their time to help sell €2 wristbands and badges.

Irene Timmons, Head of Fundraising for Make-A-Wish, told Newstalk: "Wish Day is basically the biggest gig of the year for us. It's our national fundraising day, and that means we will have volunteers nationwide.

"The primary aim of it is fundraising, but of course it's to raise awareness of the work of Make-A-Wish around the country as well."

She also described some of the wishes the charity has granted recently.

"We had a child go to a Broadway show, who was just really really interested in singing and musicals. That was pretty fantastic for her.

"We had a girl who wanted to be a make-up artist at London Fashion Week. So she went along to a show, and got to take part in all of the backstage stuff there.

"We had another child who went to see the Northern Lights in Iceland. She had an absolute ball."

Irene also explained that many children have less far-flung wishes, such as being a fireman or princess for a day.

"On the more medical side of things, some of the children who may have sensory issues... some of the wishes will be sensory bedrooms or play areas," she added. "They can cost a lot of money, but the permanency and the tangibility in relation to impact is huge for those sort of wishes."
