When it comes to buying a car, the discussion around going for new versus used will undoubtedly come up. In Ireland, 2017 has seen a decline in the number of new car sales, according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry.

Why might this be? Well, despite Ireland’s economic prospects looking up overall, the likelihood is that people are remaining cautious. With the rise in prices of petrol and diesel, it’s probably a wise move as well.

The used car and import markets in Ireland paint a different picture though. The first half of 2017 has seen spending on used car imports from the UK and Northern Ireland more than double.

Over 46,000 cars were imported from January - June 2017, marking a 41% increase on the same time period in 2016.

Traditionally, with currency exchange and the work involved in importing a UK-registered car in Ireland, a lot of people opted to go with the easy option of buying in Ireland. However, with the announcement of Brexit and the fall in the pound, this mindset appears to have been reversed.

And why not? There’s far more choice in the UK for people looking to buy used cars given it now boasts the largest used car market in Europe.

And larger companies like the Jennings Motor Group are ruling the roost when it comes to used cars and vans. In fact, one of the most popular options for anyone looking to buy a new vehicle is the Ford Transit Custom, according to Jennings.

Offering the feeling and comfort of a car with the usefulness and size of a van, the Ford Transit Custom is probably one of the finest mid-weight vans available on the market today.

Jennings Motor Group spoke to Newstalk.com about some of the reasons why this van should be top of your list next time you’re looking:

  1. You can extend your load space, which means the load area is separated from the passenger cabin. Why display your valuables on the roof  when you can transport them safely behind the rear doors and even into an extended area under the van’s dual passenger seat?
  2. Trailer safety! A trailer sway control informs you about trailer sway so you have greater visibility and control while towing.
  3. It’s pedestrian-friendly. In the Ford Transit Custom, you are forewarned of approaching vehicles and pedestrians by a Pre-Collision notification. The system applies the brakes automatically if you do not respond, thus preventing any collision.
  4. It offers advanced handsfree tech. Your mobile device is connected with the Ford SYNC system via bluetooth enabling you to use your voice to control music or to take calls. There is also an AppLink for Android users so you can use voice-control to access some of the popular apps on your Android Phone. And if there is an accident, there is a further feature known as Emergency Assistance, designed to place a call with Emergency Services.
  5. Security! The FOrd Transit Custom is secured with its remote control central door locking; whereas there is an added option of opening one door without automatically unlocking the others. Two different types of alarms are available but they are optional!
