Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, will look like a bright star beside the moon on Sunday, in what astronomers have described as ''an event for your bucket list” this year.

An astronomer has said that the two brightest objects in the night sky, will be 'closer together than you will ever see again in your life'.

He added:

"It is really only a line-of-sight effect with Jupiter being 2,000 times further away than the Moon, but to the general public it will look like the two brightest objects in the night sky will be beside one another in the most impressive display the Moon can ever put on with another celestial object!"

"It's an amazing sight that never fails to amaze me even after years of seeing it in a large telescope.

Jupiter is currently at its closest point to the Earth and will be visible from all over the world.

Although the moon and Jupiter will be at their closest distance on Sunday, they will be almost as close on Monday night. Astronomy Ireland will be hosting an event on Monday where they will be using some of the most powerful telescopes in the world to capture the occasion and enable the public to take it all in.

This will be a free event at Astronomy Ireland's Headquarters in Blanchardstown. Booking is not required and donations are welcome.

Patrons who stay after 10pm will get a chance to see the Great Red Spot on Jupiter - the biggest storm in the solar system with winds reaching gusts of 500km/h for more than 300 years.
