Rapper Tupac Shakur and pop star Janet Jackson were among 19 artists nominated today for induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

American rock band Pearl Jam, English eletronic veterans Depeche Mode and funk singer Chaka Khan were also included on the nominees list, which will be voted on by fans and industry experts.

Shakur was killed in 1996 in an unsolved drive-by shooting in Las Vegas when he was 25. The Harlem born rapped is considered to be one of the most influential voices in hip hop today.

His nomination follows California rappers N.W.A.'s induction into the Hall of Fame last year as the fifth hip-hop act ever to be voted in.

Jackson, 50, is the youngest member of the famed Jackson singing family, and has been waiting for a chance to be inducted since she became eligible in 2007.

Other artists nominated include Chic, Electric Light Orchestra, Journey, Kraftwerk and The Cars.

The inductees are chosen by fans and by an international body of some 800 artists, historians and members of the music industry who are asked to consider musical influence, innovation and length and depth of career.

The official inductees for 2017 will be announced in December when voting is complete.
