Carpool karaoke king James Corden is vying for a number one this Christmas, with his contribution to Sainsbury's Christmas ad for 2016.

In the UK's longest advert in the history of television, sees the late-night host voice time-poor dad Dave singing The Greatest Gift for Christmas is Me.

The song was written by Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords fame, who won an Oscar in 2012 for The Muppets' track Man Or Muppet.

The track faces strong competition from Vaults cover version of One Day I'll Fly Away, featured in the John Lewis' commercial.

In a first for a UK ad, the story of Dave and his battle to juggle work with family life stretches for three minutes and 20 seconds, making it the longest ever.

It is one minute and 20 seconds longer than the John Lewis version and will take over the whole slot in the 9.15pm break during ITV’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!

The ground-breaking animated epic is also the first in the UK to use full colour 3D printed faces for its characters, with more than 1,000 created for the Hollywood-style production.

The animation is directed by Chris Fell, who was behind BAFTA-nominated Flushed Away, and is a charming tale of the importance of sharing the gift of time with loved ones.

Corden has previously collaborated with musical heavy-weights Lady GaGa and One Direction on his acclaimed Late Late Show slot.

Sainsbury’s spokesperson Sarah Kilmartin said on the ad: “We think many families will be able to relate to the idea that Christmas can be such a busy time that it can be hard to prioritise simple family time together.

“We hope our advert will remind people of that while providing some lighthearted entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.”
