Hollywood actor Brad Pitt has spoken about his drinking, saying he did not want to live like that anymore.

He told GQ magazine: "I mean, we have a winery. I enjoy wine very, very much, but I just ran it to the ground.

"I had to step away for a minute. And truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good.

"(I) Don't want to live that way anymore."

The 53-year-old said he has replaced alcohol with "cranberry juice and fizzy water" - adding "I've got the cleanest urinary tract in all of LA, I guarantee you!".

He told the publication: "I can't remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn't boozing or had a spliff, or something.

"Something. And you realize that a lot of it is, cigarettes, you know, pacifiers. And I'm running from feelings.

"I'm really, really happy to be done with all of that. I mean I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family.

"But even this last year, you know—things I wasn't dealing with. I was boozing too much".

Pitt also said that the past six months was a "weird" time.

Last September when he was on a flight to Los Angeles aboard a private plane, there was a reported altercation between Pitt and one of his six children.

A phone call was made to authorities, which triggered an FBI investigation, which ultimately was closed with no charges.

Five days later his wife, Angelina Jolie, filed for divorce.

Gina London is a former CNN correspondent.

She told the Pat Kenny Show here on Newstalk that Pitt is looking to recreate himself.

"This interview, very candid it appeared to be, he takes a lot of the ownership, he takes the responsibility talking about his boozing - as he calls it - from the time he was in college on.

"I think it actually says a lot to him about wanting to keep that family intact.

"He goes on to say how he aspired to be smoking pot with Willie Nelson and Snoop Dog - and that sort of thing.

"The result of that is that he's now living on his own in the home that he once shared with Angelina and the children; and he makes a remark in that interview that it's very quiet and solemn there now, where it once had the boisterous clattering of children.

"And that he really is finally taking responsibility as a father and an adult."

"It sounds like he is really trying to recreate himself - and he says himself there at 53, he feels he's got so much more to give and he really wants to take his time to make it right".
