Former New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani has admitted that he doesn’t know whether Donald Trump has committed sexual assault in the past.

When ABC host George Stephanopoulos put it to Mr Giuliani that Trump’s “grab them by the pussy” comments amount to a description of sexual assault, Mr Giuliani replied, “That is what he is talking about.”

“Whether it happened or not, I don’t know. How much exaggeration was involved in that, I don’t know,” he said.

“I do know there is a tendency on the part of some men at different times to exaggerate things like this and I am not in any way trying to excuse it or condone it.”

A number of stories regarding Trump's past treatment of women have emerged following the release of the audio.

A New York Times column released on Friday documents the “relentless” unwanted advances Trump made toward Jill Harth, a business associate of his in the 90s.

In a video uploaded to YouTube earlier this year, Ms Harth said Trump cornered her during a tour of his Palm Beach Mansion.

"He was showing me this big mural and the next thing I know, he was pushing me up against the wall and making a move on me and was all over me," Harth said, adding, "I had to push him off of me."

In March of 1993, Trump again allegedly assaulted Harth, who later brought charges of sexual assault against him.

“He was very aggressive with me. He was always trying to grope me and touch me. I had to tell him to stop," she said.

Ms Harth eventually dropped the charges and Trump denies “each and every statement made by Ms. Harth.”

On Friday, CNN's Erin Burnett also brought forward allegations, on behalf of a friend, of Trump sexually assaulting another woman.

"The Tic Tacs. That's exactly what Trump did to me," Burnett said. "Trump took Tic Tacs, suggested that I take them also. He then leaned in ... catching me off guard and kissed me almost on the lips. I was really freaked out."

The Trump campaign did not responded to a CNN request for comment on the allegations.

Mr Giuliani told This Week that the Republican candidate felt "ashamed" about the audio and said he believed he would apologise again at tonight's presidential debate.

He said he doesn't know whether Trump will discuss Bill Clinton's sexual history as he faces the former First Lady, saying it depends "how the debate goes."

"I don't know how much time they are going to spend on these personal things and how much time they will spend on the issues that are involved - of which there are many," he said.

The debate begins at 2am tonight.
