Gardaí say a teenager who was seriously assaulted on Sunday evening in Maynooth may have been attacked by someone who had been on the bus with her.

Kym Owens, a first year student from Caslteblayney in Co Monaghan, was returning to her digs near Maynooth University when she was set upon.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the brutal attack, which took place in Kildare on Sunday evening.

Kym travelled on the A to B bus service from Monaghan town via Castleblayney, arriving in Maynooth at 8.15pm.

At time of the attack Kym was wearing a long dark green coat with a hood, black jeans, a red hoodie and white converse runners.

She was carrying a green sports bag with 'Castleblaney Faughs' on the side.

Superintendent Gerry Wall from Leixlip garda station gave details, and made an appeal for information.

It is not yet clear if Kym was robbed, but she sustained serious facial injuries and is in a serious condition in hospital.

Students say it has left them feeling shaken and nervous to walk alone.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information - particularly anyone who was on the bus, those who were in the vicinity of Maynooth Village/Moyglare Abbey Estate between 7.30pm and 9.15pm on Sunday night, and anybody who noticed anything unusual - to contact them.

They can call Leixlip garda station on 01-666-7800, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
