The three of them were working for production company #5 Bis Productions on a programme for the French news programme Envoye Special, aired on public television channel France 2.

Veronique Robert was an experienced war correspondent specialising in coverage of the Middle East, Iraq in particular.

Secretary-general of Reporters without Borders (RSF), Christophe Deloire lamented the fact that too many foreign correspondents were being killed on the front line.

According to their tally, Veronique Robert's death brings the number of journalists killed in Iraq since 2014 to 29.

Her producer, Nicolas Jaillard paid tribute to her in a Facebook post saying "We were expecting less bad news this week. She will not come.

"Véronique Robert died this morning in France, surrounded by her boys.

"You will discover in portraits this extraordinary woman. The word sadness is far too short to describe what one feels in a photo."
