A Dublin-based Garda has been found guilty of harassing her boyfriend’s ex-wife on dates between September 2011 and March 2013.
Eve Doherty’s trial heard she sent abusive emails and letters to Elizabeth Howlin’s home, workplace and GP.
Before the jurors began their deliberations yesterday, they were asked to consider three charges against Garda Eve Doherty.
They had to decide whether she harassed Elizabeth Howlin in the 18 months leading up to March 2013 and whether she made false statements on two occasions in 2012 claiming she was using her position as a directing officer with the DPP to pervert the course of justice.
And after three hours and 18 minutes, they found her guilty of the harassment charge and acquitted her of the other two.
Her trial heard Ms Howlin received abusive letters and emails accusing her of being corrupt and calling her an “incompetent useless hobbit”.
Gardaí gave evidence of Ms Doherty using a computer in an internet café while wearing a wig and sunglasses.
The 49-year-old will be sentenced in October.
