The man behind Ireland's worst ever car crash will be back in court today for a fresh sentence hearing after his two-year jail term was set aside on appeal.

Shaun Kelly, 26, of Hill Road in Ballymagan, Co. Donegal killed eight people while driving towards Buncrana in July 2010.

That evening he was driving back from a pub where he had been watching the World Cup Final. He had not been drinking but allowed seven of his friends into the car, none of whom wore seatbelts.

Kelly crashed into the car of 66-year-old Hugh Friel, who was returning from bingo, leaving Kelly the only survivor.

He was jailed this time last year but an appeal found his sentence unduly lenient and another hearing will take place.
