British Prime Minister David Cameron has said Donald Trump's comments on banning Muslims are "dangerous" but he is prepared to meet him if he comes to the UK.

Mr Cameron has been outspoken in his criticism of the presumptive Republican nominee's proposal, which he called "divisive, stupid and wrong" in December.

Mr Trump has called for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US.

Speaking on ITV's Peston On Sunday, Mr Cameron said: "It's a very dangerous thing to say...as well as a divisive and wrong one".

However, he said he would be prepared to meet Mr Trump if he came to Britain ahead of the US election.

Mr Cameron has previously said he will work with the winner of November's election and is committed to maintaining the US-UK relationship, his spokesman has said.

Asked by presenter Robert Peston if he would meet Mr Trump ahead of the US election, Mr Cameron said: "American presidential candidates have made a habit of coming through Europe and through the UK, so if that happens I'd be very happy to".

"I don't withdraw in any way what I said about the policy of not letting Muslims in to America. I do think that is wrong and divisive".

"We've got to demonstrate that what we're up against here is a very small minority of a minority, Islamist extremists, that want to divide our societies, and we've got to explain that there are billions of people in our world who are devout Muslims but who believe in liberal democracy and all the things we believe in".

On Friday Mr Trump claimed he had been invited to visit London, but this was denied by sources.

"I will do just fine with David Cameron," the New York property magnate told MSNBC. "I think he's a nice guy. I will do just fine".

"But they have asked me to visit 10 Downing Street - and I might do it".
