Reports that late president of the Grupo Modelo brewing giant Antonino Fernández  left each villager in his hometown $2 million have left residents "baffled".

Earlier today, media outlets reported that the beer baron, who died in August at the age of 99, made the village of Cerezales del Condado millionaires by leaving each resident a sum of money in his will.

“He left money to his family in his will, but he didn’t leave any to the people in the village,” said a spokeswoman for the Fundación Cerezales Antonino y Cinia, which was set up by Fernández and his wife.

“We’ve read the articles but we’ve got no idea how it got around. We think it came from an article in the Diario de León after he died, which said he’d left more than €200m to his relatives.”

However, Fernandez did leave part of huge fortune to the descendants of his 13 siblings, as he had no children of his own.

Fernandez invested a large stake of his money into the maintenance of the town: placing a network of new pipelines that allowed water supply to all residents. He supervised the maintenance of the cemetery and the roads and ordered the renovation of the town square, according to Maximino Sanchez, the owner of the town’s bar and the president of the neighborhood council.

Antonino Fernandez emigrated to Mexico to make his fortune. The billionaire was previously honored by the former King of Spain for his charitable deeds.
