Thousands of Dublin commuters will have to find an alternative way home from work today as the Luas Green Line will be out of action until 6:30 tomorrow morning.

Luas operator Transdev said the stoppage is due to a fault with an overhead line and apologised to passengers.

The company is investigating how the fault occurred with repair crews set to work throughout the night to bring the line back into operation.

The service has been suspended since nine o'clock this morning and a number of trams have been damaged by the fault.

Commuters in south Dublin were pictured walking along the tracks this morning to get into the city centre.

Transdev has apologised for any inconvenience caused, saying tickets could be validated on Dublin Bus.

Finnegan coach bus have been dispatched to ferry passengers between the Dundrum and Brides Glen stops.

All lifts, escalators and red line trams are operating as normal.

Customers have been advised to look for further updates on luas.ie and the Luas Twitter account.
