Six people have been killed after gunmen attacked an airforce base in northern India.

At least four suspected jihadist militants opened fire at the Pathankot base near the border with Pakistan late last night.

The gun battle lasted several hours, and led to the deaths of the four attackers and two Indian airforce personnel.

A helicopter was reportedly seen firing at an area inside the base.

The Times of India reports that fresh gunfire was heard an hour after the battle ended, leading to concerns a fifth shooter was inside the base.

The base is located on the central road leading to the Indian-administered Kashmir region, BBC reports.

The Punjab region has been placed on a state of alert following the attack. No group has yet claimed responsibility.

The incident comes days after India's prime minister Narendra Modi visited Pakistani leader Nawaz Sharif, seen as an effort to decrease tensions between the neighbouring country.
