Police in Luxembourg say one person is dead and several injured after a train crash.

The cause of the collision is not known.

Rescue operations are underway, with some 100 rescue and police personnel involved.

Police say two injured people were taken to hospital, while one body was taken from the train.

A freight train coming from France and a passenger train from Luxembourg, which was traveling towards France, collided.

It happened between Bettembourg and Zoufftgen shortly before 9.00am on Tuesday.

Police are carrying out an investigation on the order of the public prosecutor's office.

The Luxemburger Wort says two people are still trapped on the train.

It is thought the route from Luxembourg to Thionville will be suspended for up to 48 hours.
