American band Vulfpeck had their album removed from music-streaming service Spotify after they attempted to rake in thousands from royalties on an empty album.

'Sleepify,' which contained 10 tracks of silence, was uploaded with the idea that fans could play it on loop while they sleep, so that the band would receive enough royalties to put on free gigs during their upcoming tour. The songs were around 30 seconds long and contained titles like 'z,' 'zz,' and 'zzz.'

A report by On the Media claims that by the beginning of the month, the songs had received a total of over 4 million listens, earning over $20,000.

Spotify, which pays an average of $0.007 per play, decided that the album broke their terms of service and removed it on Tuesday.

This video by band member Jack Stratton explains the grand plan behind 'Sleepify.'

And if you’d still like to chill out to some non-music, John Cage’s seminal '4’33”' is still available on Spotify here.
