John Giles did mention that he was "no angel" on Off The Ball tonight.

But one texter did put him on the spot by reminding him of a wee incident from his Manchester United days.

Eamon Dunphy's latest book recounts a tale when John was among a group of players arrested for squirting water pistols at passersbys while driving around 1960s Manchester.

John confirmed the veracity of the tale and had a good laugh about it.

"It's true Ger. I was very young at the time. There was a pal of mine, Jimmy Shields, a Derry lad who was at Manchester United at the time and he started it. He had been [squirting water pistols] in Derry over the summer. Shay Brennan, a senior lad, was driving. Wilf McGuiness was in the car and he and I were injured at the time. We thought it was pretty harmless and a bit of fun. But about 20 or 30 people reported the number of the car and we finished up going to court."

John remembered that it was covered in the national newspapers and how manager Matt Busby was "not happy" about it. But he also revealed how Busby's wife calmed the situation.

Meanwhile, John has joined the Tim Sherwood fan club. But it's not about the Tottenham head coach's tactics as he explained to Ger tonight.

What impressed John was the way in which Sherwood refused to find excuses for the 5 - 1 defeat to Manchester City last night, even though Spurs were harshly reduced to ten men.

It flies in the face of managers and players' behaviour towards referees. John feels the treatment of referees is getting worse, with Alex Ferguson among the most culpable.

"Ferguson definitely intimidated referees. There's no doubt about it. I think Ferguson is mainly responsible for the attitude of managers towards referees. He definitely bullied them even up to last year when he had a go at Mike Reilly, the linesman and the fourth official when replays showed the linesman was right. Reilly never reported him to the Football Association so they never took any action against him. I think he frightened the life out of referees. Ferguson has a lot to answer with the attitude of young referees."

John also touched on Manchester City's frighteningly formidable form and also lashed out at the "hugely hypocritical" Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by West Ham last night with Mourinho taking potshots at Sam Allardyce's defensive approach after the match.

While John admitted that he is not a fan either Mourinho and Allardyce, he pointed out the constant inconsistencies in what the Special Ones says and does when it comes to tactics and diving.

"Mourinho is hugely hypocritical. When he was at Inter Milan they played Barcelona and what did he do in those matches? He parked about three buses! But if somebody else does it to him, then they're not supposed to do it which is total nonsense. I wouldn't have any sympathy for him and it's no surprise to see Sam giving himself a slap in the back. I'm surprised he hasn't broken his arms over the years in slapping himself in the back."
