100 students, ranging in ages from 13 to 17, took part in an event hosted by ISPCC Childline and Vodafone Ireland Foundation on Thursday.

The multi-site conference asked young people in Dublin, Dundalk, Galway and Cork about their experiences and thoughts on what can be done to increase online safety.

Those in attendance agreed that the current life skills and online safety education are 'outdated' and all of those taking part said a Children and Young Person's National Cyber Safety Strategy is needed.

Some students suggested that the teaching of online safety should be part of the curriculum, as too should the teaching of life skills.

ISPCC CEO Grainia Long stated: “Cyber safety is the child protection issue of our time and it is so important that we listen to young people and children on how this affects them and how, as a society, we should take on the issue. It is clear that a national children’s cyber safety strategy should be an urgent priority for the government."
