Xtra-vision is planning to close 28 stores, with the loss of almost 90 jobs.

It is likely the closures will happen after Christmas.

The Irish Independent reports that the decision stems from the decline in DVD rentals, and puts 55 full-time and 31 "full-time equivalent" positions at risk.

In a statement to the paper, the company said it "is condensing its store portfolio to a smaller number of focused retail locations, while remaining dedicated to its investment in Xtra-vision Express; its vending machines operation, and its online channels, which are proving increasingly popular with customers".

It is understood a consultation process with staff is underway.

BBC has reported that eight Northern Irish stores are set to close.

Xtra-vision was purchased by Hilco Capital in 2013, who went on to 'dual-brand' several HMV and Xtra-vision stores here.
