A man has gone on trial for the alleged murder of a fellow inmate at Cork Prison last year.
Brian Veale, who is originally from Dungarvan in Co. Waterford, denies stabbing Graham Johnson in the prison’s kitchen area.
He and Mr. Johnson, a 41-year-old father of three, were inmates of Cork prison and both working in the kitchen on May 16th of last year.
Tim O’Leary, acting for the DPP, told the jurors it will be alleged a row broke out between the pair at around 3pm that afternoon.
He said they will hear evidence that it arose over the switching between a racing channel and Sky Sports News on the kitchen's TV.
Mr. Veale is accused of stabbing his fellow inmate with a large kitchen knife two hours later.
Eyewitnesses will give evidence of seeing Mr. Johnson falling onto the ground very quickly and of the accused being relatively calm afterwards.
The court heard a bloodied knife was found in the kitchen and that blood samples taken from Mr. Veale’s clothes matched his alleged victim's DNA.
The trial is due to finish sometime next week.
