Three men remain in custody after a “significant amount” of suspected explosives were discovered in a car in Dublin yesterday.
A number of roads were closed after gardaí discovered the explosives during a search of a car on Spring Garden Street, Ballybough at around 6pm on Friday.
The army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called to the scene.
The recovered plastic explosives and a detonator are being analysed by forensic experts.
The search was undertaken as part of an ongoing investigation into dissident republican activity.
Two men – aged 21 and 28 – were arrested following the search and this afternoon gardaí extended the period of detention for both men as the investigation continues.
In a follow-up search that took place yesterday evening, a 55-year-old man was arrested. He is being detained at Raheny Garda Station.
