Sony's shareholders are in for some enjoyable reading today after the company announced that it had tripled its profits in Q2 of 2015, in spite of the fact that its mobile sales continue to dwindle.

The PlayStation 4 sold 3 million units in the period stretching from April to June bringing the total sales of the console up to 25.3 million units since its release in 2013.

Sales for the console have now reached $2.365 billion and the company claim that it is selling nearly double the amount of PlayStation 4s as Xbox Ones that are being sold.

The staggering sales of the games console have seen the company ride the woes of its struggling mobile division which has seen sales fall by 16.3 percent.

Sony's mobile sales have struggled in recent years due to the overwhelming popularity of Apple and Samsung as well as the rise of Taiwanese manufacturer HTC.

Sony says that their drop in sales is partly due to a strategic plan that has seen them focus on their more high-end smartphones like the Z3+.

Outside of gaming, Sony's imaging department is also showing good profitability for the company. Sony's imaging unit saw an increase of 35.1 percent in sales bringing them to $2 billion and they also say they are going to invest a further $3.6 billion to boost sensor production.

Finally the company's camera division is also proving to be a valuable asset heralding a 5 percent increase in sales making a profit of $174 million.

Sony's figures for this quarter are encouraging and may be slightly skewed by the alarmingly good sales of the PlayStation division. While it may be unimaginable to see a world without Sony Mobile, it may not be far off after the Vaio range was cut off from the company.
