The 27-year-old actor wore a black tuxedo to the event but covered his face with a brown bag with the phrase “I am not famous anymore” scribbled in black marker.

He was somehow able to navigate the red carpet with two eyeholes cut from the paper.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shia was the first of the cast to arrive at the premiere for the Lars von Trier film on Sunday night, and was already inside before group photos were taken.

Shia’s antics followed just hours after he stormed out of a press conference after being asked one question about the film’s many sex scenes.

Before leaving he quoted French soccer star Eric Cantona: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much.”

The athlete had made the comment at a press conference in 1995.

Shia has made the “I am not famous” proclamation before, writing it several times on his Twitter account using the handle @thecampaignbook.

The actor has been the subject of controversy in recent months amid allegations of plagiarism.

Shia was called out when his debut short film HowardCantour.com included notable similarities to graphic novelist Daniel Clowe's comic Justin M. Damiano.

The star offered an apology, including one on Twitter which was also plagiarised from a four-year-old Yahoo Answers comment, according to Vulture.com.

Daniel addressed the controversy last month.

"I've never even seen one of his films that I can recall - and I was shocked, to say the least, when I saw that he took the script and even many of the visuals from a very personal story I did six or seven years ago and passed it off as his own work," the novelist told BuzzFeed.

"I actually can't imagine what was going through his mind."

Shia later stated the plagiarism was part of a performance art project.
