The mother of Pogues singer Shane MacGowan has died in a car crash in Tipperary.

Therese MacGowan - who was in her late 80s - lost her life when her car hit a wall at Ballintogher, near Silvermines at around 3pm yesterday afternoon.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her remains were removed to University Hospital Limerick, where a post mortem is due to be carried out.
