Sam Smith has confirmed he will sing the theme song for the new Bond movie, Spectre.

The song is called 'Writing's On The Wall' and will be unveiled on September 25th.

The British star dropped a massive hint on Monday when when he tweeted a picture of a ring featuring the Spectre logo.

He confirmed the news today in a series of tweets in which he described it as "one of the highlights of my career".

"I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations," Smith tweeted.

"I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it".

The 'Stay With Me' singer denied only days ago that he was involved with the latest film in the franchise, saying he was too busy.

Ed Sheeran, Ellie Goulding, Paloma Faith and Lana Del Rey were some of the others rumoured to have been in the running.

Smith becomes the first British male solo singer to record the Bond theme since 1965. The tune has been co-written with Grammy-winner Jimmy Napes.

Spectre producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said it would "surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time".

In a press release they described the song as "inspirational song" with an "extraordinary vocal performance".

Smith has had a stellar couple of years, going from lending his voice to hit dance songs to becoming a massive star in his own right.

The 23-year-old has also achieved big success in America, winning four prestigious Grammy Awards.

Daniel Craig returns as Bond for a fourth time, while double-Oscar winner Christoph Waltz plays 007's nemesis.

Other stars from previous film 'Skyfall' - Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes and Rory Kinnear - are also returning, as is British film-maker Sam Mendes.
