A Norwegian man who repeatedly raped his girlfriend while she slept in their Dublin flat between 2011 and 2012 has been jailed for 15 months.

Earlier, the Court of Appeal set aside the fully suspended sentence previously handed down to Magnus Meyer-Hustveit.

A few months after first meeting in May 2011, Hustveit moved into a Dublin city apartment with Niamh Ní Dhomhnaill.

After suspecting he was having sex with her while she slept, she confronted him - and he sent her an e-mail admitting to using her body for his own gratification.

In deciding to fully suspend a seven year sentence last July, Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy described it as an "exceptional case" and one that would not have come to light without his admissions.

But today, the Court of Appeal agreed it was "unduly lenient".

Hustveit had moved back to Norway where he was living with his new partner and her children.

Norway does not extradite its citizens and Mr Justice George Birmingham praised Hustveit for returning to Ireland - but decided the repeated rape of his ex-girlfriend warranted a custodial sentence.

He then jailed him for 15 months.
