Bríd Smith TD has said young people could play a key role in campaigning for a referendum
An opposition TD says that young people could be the ones to force a referendum on the 8th Amendment.
People Before Profit's Brid Smith called on young people to pressure their TDs to call for an abortion referendum.
The party launched their campaign for the repeal of the 8th Amendment today.
Bríd Smith TD says those involved in the marriage equality vote could have a big say again.
She argued: "Many young people are now saying 'well I'm disconnected from politics, I don't see its relevance. But these things are relevant to me - marriage equality is relevant to me, the right to choose is relevant to me.'"
Speaking at the launch of PBP's campaign today, Dr Peadar O’Grady of Doctors for Choice said: “It is clearly unacceptable that Ireland's laws criminalise women who access medical abortions and drive other women abroad. Abortion should be regulated, like any other part of the health service.
"There is no medical need for specific laws to regulate abortion. Abortion is a healthcare issue; restricting access to abortion is a political issue. We need to Repeal the 8th Amendment and take politics out of healthcare," he added.
The Government is in the process of organising a Citizens' Assembly, which will look at the issue of the 8th Amendment and offer recommendations for consideration by the Government.
