The governor of the Central bank will today return to the Banking Inquiry to clarify statements he made to it in January.

Patrick Honohan told the inquiry that he believed Anglo Irish Bank should have been allowed to fail.

He said former finance minister, the late Brian Lenihan, had wanted to nationalise Anglo and Irish Nationwide - but that he was overruled.

He also told the Inquiry that guaranteeing all bank bondholders was a mistake.

Professor Honohan wrote to the Banking Inquiry last month saying he wished to clarify statements he made during his evidence on January 15th.

Issues he raised in the letter will be discussed when he re-appears before the inquiry this afternoon.
