Animal rights groups PETA is calling for an area named Eggs and Bacon Bay in Australia to be renamed to a 'healthy' alternative.
The unusual suggestion was made in a letter to the mayor of Huon Valley, a region in southern Tasmania.
PETA has instead proposed the name 'Apple and Cherry Bay', arguing that it "will highlight to Huon Valley residents that keeping bacon, eggs, and other animal-derived foods off their plates is better for their health, for the environment, and, of course, for animals."
Ashley Fruno, the Associate Director of Campaigns with PETA Australia, said: "Considering the high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat in both eggs and bacon, the area may as well be called ‘Heart Attack Bay'".
The bay's unusual name is sometimes claimed to have originated after Jane Franklin - the wife of the explorer and governor John Franklin - ate a meal of bacon and eggs in the area during the 19th century.
However, 'nomenclature expert' Wayne Smith told ABC that the name in fact predates Mrs Franklin, and instead refers to the 'eggs and bacon' flowers that can be seen growing in the area for a few months every year.
Local residents, meanwhile, defended the area's name, with one telling ABC: "There's plenty of room in the world for them to go and annoy other people and leave us in peace".
