A north Co Dublin principal is being hailed as a hero after helping to save a 9-year-old boy who collapsed in the yard.

Tim O'Tuachaigh started CPR and sent for the defibrillator during the incident earlier this month.

The device had been donated by Apache Pizza to the local GAA club in Rush.

First responders arrived at Gaelscoil Ros Eo around 25 minutes after the boy collapsed, and they said it the quick response from staff at the school helped save the young pupil.

The boy is still in hospital, and the principal says they are looking forward to welcoming him back to school once he's discharged.

Tim is now calling for defibrillators to be installed in schools as standard.

He explained: "Generally, schools aren't supplied with defibrillators as a standard piece of equipment. Any school that has a defibrillator has managed to acquire it somehow - either through fundraising themselves, or sometimes there might be a benefactor."

He suggested that to install a defibrillator costs around €1,200, with a few hundred euro extra to train staff in its use. After that, it costs around €500 a year to maintain and power it.

Tim argued: "It's not a huge amount of money.

"When I see the result of what happened with the boy in our school, you're saying to yourself then 'yeah, that is a good way to spend money' [...] It would be fantastic if it could be looked at [nationwide]."
