A technical examination took place at the scene, and the road has since reopened.

A man in his 40s was arrested this afternoon in connection with the investigation.

He is being held at Thurles Garda Station.

Gardaí in Thurles are appealing for witnesses - or any person who can assist with the investigation - to contact them at Thurles Garda Station on 050-425-100, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111 or any Garda station.

This death brought the number of casualties on Irish roads this past weekend to five.

A young boy and three motorcyclists died in separate incidents.

The boy (6) passed away at Temple Street Children's Hospital on Sunday after being knocked down and seriously injured on Friday evening on Dublin's Shanganagh Road.

The three motorcyclists died in separate crashes in Limerick and Dublin.

The deaths come as road safety experts appeal for drivers to take extra care on the roads ahead of the August bank holiday weekend.
