Gardaí are investigating after a man was shot dead in Cork city.

It happened near the Church of the Annunciation on Great William O’Brien Street in Blackpool, at around 5.00pm Wednesday.

The 37-year-old man, who is believed to be from Ballyvolane on the northside of the city, suffered apparent gunshot wounds.

It is believed he was was shot in the back three times.

He received medical assistance at the scene and was taken to Cork University Hospital.

However, he was later pronounced dead. A post mortem is to be arranged.

The scene at Great William O’Brien Street is preserved.

Gardaí have located two partially burnt out vehicles - at Redemption Road, Blackpool and at Killeens.

These scenes have also been preserved for a technical examination.

No arrests have been made and gardaí are conducting door-to-door inquiries in the area.

They are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information - particularly those who may have been in the vicinity of Great William O’Brien Street and or the Church of the Annunciation, Blackpool this afternoon between the hours of 3.30pm and 5.30pm to contact them.
