On Thursday this week, Shane Coleman hosted a debate about female grooming and shaving of body hair.

He first spoke to Professor Emer O'Toole about the pressure on women to groom - which has led her to choose to not shave any of her body hair for the last four years.

Professor O'Toole stresses it is important that women's bodies are there to be enjoyed, for women to feel confident and comfortable in, and to express themselves through.

However she says women should ask two things when they are making themselves up or grooming. "First is capitalist pressure," she explained. "Are you being coerced into buying a product or service... and being convinced that without buying you are in someway disgusting or unhygienic, or subnormal?"

Secondly, she says it is important to ask "are the men thinking about this? Is the man in my office worried about mascara smear? Is he teetering down the hall in increasingly painful shoes? If the answer is no... then we can look at that gender division and consider that probably it's harmful."

Emer was not the only person in studio to discuss the subject. Gillian Fitzpatrick, editor of Shemazing, believes that women want to remove their body hair because it makes them feel clean.

Gillian agreed with Emer that "we shouldn't feel pressure and you should just do what makes you feel good." However, she argued "for me and it seems lots and lots of my friends - in fact to my knowledge of all of my friends - that involves hair removal... It's up there with basic maintenance stuff.

"I put it out to the Shemazing readers... I said 'do you wax or shave or laser or just leave it as is'? And overwhelmingly, everyone said 'I would absolutely make sure I shave. I do it in the shower, it's just part and parcel of having a scrub'."

Women shave "regardless of whether they're in a relationship or not," she added, comparing it to men shaving their facial hair.

Shane also spoke to hair removal and laser specialist Stephanie Murray - and ended up getting a leg wax himself:
