Irish workers have four less paid and public holidays than the European Union average of 33 days. Ireland, Switzerland and Germany have an average of 29 days holidays each a year while Brits get just 28 days.

But the Russians and Italians top the table benefiting from 40 and 36 days holiday respectively.

The research from Hotels.com reveals discrepancies in paid and public holiday entitlements across the continent.

Of the 12 European nations surveyed it found the average leave and public holiday entitlement is 33 days across Europe meaning Irish workers lose out on 4 days out of the office each year compared to some of their European counterparts.

A plethora of bank holidays also exist across Europe with Spain, Italy and Russia leading the way with 12 days each. This is thanks to holidays such as 'Victory Day' in Russia and the 'Assumption of Mary' in August in Spain.

Mexico comes last world-wide

Globally Mexico has the lowest total of paid and public holidays. Just 13 days are given to workers per year comprising 6 public holidays and 7 days annual leave which is almost 30 days less than the top ranking country of Russia.

China, Thailand and Taiwan only receive 5, 6 and 7 days annual leave respectively but benefit from a substantial number of public holidays per year.

Alison Couper is from Hotels.com "“Irish workers are towards the bottom of the table when it comes to the amount of bank holidays and annual leave days, compared to their European counterparts" she said. "However they can take some comfort from the fact that they're not the most hard done by nation globally, with Mexicans receiving a mere 13 days holiday a year" she added.
