An Irish man has died after being stabbed at a restaurant in the Australian city of Sydney.

It is understood the man was from Dublin and had been living and working in Australia for a number of years.

At around 9.30pm local time last night the man, aged in his 50s, was having dinner with a woman at a restaurant in a shipping centre in Hornsby.

A man approached the pair and stabbed him.

The woman who was with him was also injured and taken to hospital.

The man has been named locally as 53-year-old Keith Collins, originally from Dublin.

A man in his 40s has been arrested and was taken to Hornsby Police Station.

He later appeared in court charged with murder and attempted murder.

No application for bail was made, and he was remanded to appear in court again in May.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it has received no request for consular assistance in the case.
