Irish musical Sing Street is among the films nominated for this year's Golden Globe Awards, while Ruth Negga, Colin Farrell and Caitriona Balfe are also in competition for awards.

The awards encompass both television and film, and are seen as a key indicator of what films and performers are also likely to go on to Oscar success and recognition.

Sing Street has been nominated in the Best Picture (comedy/musical) category - facing tough competition by other critical favourites La La Land, 20th Century Women, Florence Foster Jenkins and Deadpool.

Up-and-coming star Ruth Negga has been nominated for Best Actress in a drama film for her role in Loving

She is up against Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Isabelle Huppert and Natalie Portman.

Negga's co-star Joel Edgerton is up for a Best Actor award for his work in the historical drama.

Colin Farrell is in contention for Best Actor (comedy/musical) for his role in The Lobster, with Caitriona Balfe in the running for her performance in TV series Outlander.

Musical La La Land leads the pack with seven nominations, followed by six nods for Moonlight and five for Manchester by the Sea. The three films are all due for release in Ireland early next year.

James Hickey, Chief Executive of the Irish Film Board, congratulated the Irish nominees, saying they have been "recognised amongst the best in the world in their craft".

Mr Hickey observed: “Sing Street and The Lobster are supported by the IFB and we are very proud of the teams behind each film. John Carney's Sing Street is filmed in Dublin featuring a host of up-and-coming Irish talent and has brought an Irish story to audiences worldwide with great success.

"Colin Farrell gives a mesmerising performance in the The Lobster, a film which has brought images of Kerry around the world. I'm also delighted to see Ruth Negga receive worldwide success with her performance in Loving having begun her career on Irish projects including numerous IFB-funded films and Catriona Balfe for her performance in Outlander."

The 2017 Golden Globes will be held on January 8th, with Jimmy Fallon presenting the show.
