A German music festival has been evacuated over a possible terrorist threat, police have said.

The organisers of the Rock am Ring festival at Nurburg in western Germany said the event was suspended earlier this evening, with revellers advised to return to their campsites.

Police noted in a statement that security at the festival had been increased in the wake of the Manchester bombing last week.

They said that necessary measures were taken as they 'could not rule out a threat'.

"We are currently conducting a very intense investigation," the statement added.

Rock am Ring is one of Europe's most established rock festivals, with more than 80,000 attendees expected at tonight's event.

Liam Gallagher, German metal band Rammstein, and the British indie band Bastille were among the performers scheduled to perform tonight.

Organisers are hoping the festival, which runs over the weekend, can resume tomorrow.
