Gardai have launched a murder inquiry in Waterford, following a post mortem on the body of a woman.

31-year-old Samantha Walsh's body was found at an apartment at Thomas Court in the city on Friday afternoon.

The alarm was raised when friends became concerned when they failed to make contact with her.

She was pronounced dead at the apartment shortly after 3pm.

A post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday at University Hospital Waterford. As a result of the findings, Gardaí launched a murder investigation.

Detectives are trying to track Samantha's last known movements. They are talking to neighbours and also reviewing CCTV footage.

An incident room has been set up at Waterford Garda Station.

Superintendent Christopher Delaney said: "We are appealing to any member of the public who may have any information in respect of this crime to contact us and in particular any persons who were in the area of Thomas Street or its environs on Thursday night 27th April 2017 into the early hours of Friday morning 28th April 2017 who witnessed anything and may have any information which may assist us.”

Anyone with any information is being asked to contact Gardaí in Waterford on 051-305-300 or Garda Confidential line 1800-666-111.
