Gardai say the body found in a recycling plant in Bray in Co Wicklow was that of a baby girl, and she may have been stillborn.

Staff at the Greenstar Recycling Plant in Fassaroe in Bray discovered the remains at around 11 this morning.

Gardai say she may have been stillborn although this hasn’t been fully established. It appears the baby was carried to full term and her birth was quite recent.

Superintendent Pat Ward, who is in charge of the investigation, is urging the baby’s mother to come forward:

"I am very concerned for the welfare of the mum of this baby as she is possibly in a distressed state and in need of medical assistance. I would please ask for the mum to seek immediate medical treatment".

He made the appeal at a press conference at Bray Garda Station this evening. Greenstar handle waste from all over the country so gardaí say this appeal is nationwide.

A post mortem will be carried out tomorrow along with a full search at the waste facility.

Anyone with information can contact Bray Garda Station on 01-6665300.
