A group of GPs from South Tipperary have written an open letter to the Health Minister criticising the free care for under-sixes scheme.

The 39 GPs say they wish to provide free care to their patients under the age of six, but that the contract being offered by the HSE fails to provide them with the necessary support and protection.

They say the scheme does not ensure the continued accessibility, confidentiality and high quality expected by their patients.

The GPs are calling on Minister Varadkar to meet them to address their concerns.

New figures show 71 per cent of Irish GPs have signed up to the free scheme for under-sixes.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) says it has so far received 1,720 contracts in relation to the programme.

The highest uptake rate is in Donegal at 98 per cent, while South Tipperary has seen the lowest at just 12 per cent.

Also more than 30,000 online registrations had been received by yesterday evening.

While 36,000 under-sixes have now been registered for free GP care.

The HSE says there has been a steady stream of applications, since the process opened on Monday.

From July 1st, almost 300,000 children will be eligible to visit their doctor free of charge.
