Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said the Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan should reconsider her position following the latest revelations surrounding the force if clarity isn't given over latest garda misconduct revelations.

It was revealed earlier this week that Gardaí miscounted the number of drink driving breath-tests they carried out from 2011-2016 by almost one million. 

Nóirín O'Sullivan also faces pressure over the fact that over 14,500 people who were prosecuted for for road traffic offences will have their convictions reversed due to garda error.

Speaking on today's RTÉ’s This Week programme, Mícheál Martin made a change from Fianna Fáil’s previous position by saying that  his party cannot express confidence in the Commissioner.

Mr Martin called for Commissioner O'Sullivan to release a clearer statement explaining what exactly happened with the controversy, and why the Policing Authority was only recently told.

He said: "We need straight-talking in terms of what happened here. I think the Commissioner needs to be very blunt about what she is saying."

When Mr Martin was asked whether or not the Commissioner should reconsider her position, he replied "yes", adding that "we can no longer articulate confidence in the Garda Commissioner or indeed at this particular point in time in the administration of justice, until we get absolute clarity in plain language as to what happened here.

He also stated that An Garda Síochána's credibility and patience has been "seriously undermined by these revelations."

Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar has said that the Government has confidence in Commissioner O'Sullivan and that it was his view that she does not need to consider her position.

Sinn Féin released a statement this evening that they will tomorrow publish a motion of no confidence in Garda Commissioner O'Sullivan.
