A new poll, published as voting closed in the British referendum on EU membership, suggests that the country will remain in the European Union.

The YouGov poll found that 'Remain' are on 52% with 'Leave' on 48%.

The agency conducted a survey today, going back to the same people they spoke to yesterday to find out how they actually voted.

It found a small move to 'Remain' and based on these results, YouGov says it expects the United Kingdom to continue as a member of the European Union.

Joe Twyman, YouGov's head of political and social research said: "The results are close and it too early to call it definitively."

"But these results, along with the recent trends and historical precedent, suggest a Remain victory is the more likely outcome," he added.

It comes as UKIP leader Nigel Farage told Sky News it "looks like Remain will edge it."

He said it had been an "extraordinary" campaign and it looked like turnout had been "exceptionally high".

He also insisted UKIP were "going nowhere" and predicted the party would "continue to grow stronger in the future."
