The Central Statistics Office (CSO) says it has further deferred the publication of the latest crime statistics.

According to the CSO, the decision was made as a result of An Garda Síochána's decision to extend a review of homicide data.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Garda figures for the number of homicides in Ireland understated the actual number by 89 cases over 14 years - from 2003 until May of this year.

The official statistics were said to have been incorrect because of a series of data errors on Garda records.

The CSO suspended its publication of crime stats until the internal Garda review on the matter was completed.

In a statement this afternoon, the CSO said it recognises "that the deferral of these statistics may be a source of frustration to our users and we will advise of a revised publication timetable in due course".

"The publication of Recorded Crime statistics is dependent on the provision of data by An Garda Síochána to the CSO," the statement adds.

It comes a day after a separate Garda report found that the recording of almost 1.5 million fake tests has undermined confidence in the force.

An investigation discovered an extra 500,000 false tests, and found some gardaí were exaggerating figures by 300%.
