A suicide bomber has been killed near the United States consulate in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, according to the country's interior ministry.

Reuters has reported that the attacker parked his car at the Dr Suleiman Faqeeh Hospital, which is close to the consulate.

At about 2.15am he was approached by two security guards and he subsequently detonated his device, killing himself and lightly injuring the two men.

After the attack, the Sabq news website published a photo showing what appeared to be the remains of a man lying next to a taxi.

A spokesman for the U.S. State Department also said it was aware of reports of a blast in Jeddah and was seeking more information from the Saudi government, but added that all staff at the consulate were accounted for.

The bombing coincides with the national holiday, Independence Day in the United States.

The same embassy was the subject of an attack in 2004, resulting in nine deaths.
